An automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) usually consists of high-bay racks, stacker cranes, conveyors and warehouse control system which interfaces with warehouse management system. Sometimes the stacker crane may work with shuttle to further increase the depth of pallets (of course the picking efficiency would be reduced), A typical AS/RS configuration works with single deep or double deep pallets.
Since the stacker crane could reach the height above 30 meters, AS/RS is often applied for high bay warehouses to fully utilize the vertical volumetric space. For warehouse with low height, AS/RS is not recommended because the aisle for stacker crane occupies certain floor space, which makes the density of storage lower than we expected.

AS/RS is also commonly used for rack clad warehouse (rack supported building), rack clad building is a new trend in logistics industry, it saves up to 20% of the constructional cost and a few months of construction time for warehouse. The high bay racking structure of AS/RS may perfectly support the warehouse as steel structure, all we need is to calculate and select the proper racking specifications, the racking structure can share the loading requirement of the warehouse pillars.
Since the 1st rack clad project of a 40 meter high rack supported building for our Korean client in 2015, Huade has been accumulating lots of experience in such projects, in 2018 Huade has built a 30+ meter high rack clad warehouse with 28 stacker cranes for a large e-commerce client in Hangzhou, this year in 2020 Huade has 4 big rack clad projects being executed simultaneously ,including a 24 meter high project with 10,000 pallet lcoations in Bejing, an rack clad AS/RS with 5328 pallet locations in Chile, a 35 meter high rack clad AS/RS in Bangladesh and 40 meter high automation lab in Huade’s own factory.
