An automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) usually consists of high-bay racks, stacker cranes, conveyors and warehouse control system which interfaces with warehouse management system. Sometimes the stacker crane may work with shuttle to further increase the depth of pallets (of course the picking efficiency would be reduced),  A typical AS/RS configuration works with single deep or double deep pallets.

Since the stacker crane could reach the height above 30 meters, AS/RS is often applied for high bay warehouses to fully utilize the vertical volumetric space. For warehouse with low height, AS/RS is not recommended because the aisle for stacker crane occupies certain floor space, which makes the density of storage lower than we expected.
